Description

Join the York-Sunbury Historical Society and the Fredericton Region Museum for a captivating presentation that explores the early history of photography in Central New Brunswick. As a technology now nearing 200 years old, photography offers a unique window into the past, helping us understand the world’s recent history in ways that words alone cannot.
New Brunswick was one of the first regions in Canada to be captured through the lens of a camera, and photographers from Central New Brunswick played an important role in this early photographic history. This presentation will delve into this rich past, drawing from ongoing research into the first 100 years of photography in Atlantic Canada. Through the use of rarely seen historical records, a new narrative is emerging about this area’s influential role in the development of photography.
About the Presenter:
Jeff Ward is an amateur historian and retired professional planner. Since 2015, he has dedicated his research to identifying and documenting the photographers active in the Atlantic Provinces during the first century of photography—1839 to 1939. His work is part of an initiative known as The Early Light Project, which he shares through its Facebook page, as well as in regular publications in Photographic Canadiana, the journal of the Photographic Historical Society of Canada.
Jeff has self-published two books on the history of photography in the Atlantic region, with three more currently in preparation. A native of Moncton, Jeff has spent over 40 years living in Halifax, and he continues to travel widely across the Atlantic region to deepen his research.
