Description

For over two centuries, people of African descent in New Brunswick have been at the forefront of the fight for freedom and equality. In this presentation, Jennifer will take us through the history of this ongoing struggle, focusing on the anti-slavery movement from 1783 to 1915, and the key individuals involved - many of whom were part of the community of formerly enslaved people who arrived in New Brunswick via the Underground Railroad.

As a sixth-generation descendant of Black Loyalists and a passionate researcher, Jennifer brings a wealth of knowledge and a personal connection to this important chapter of our history. Her work as a genealogist and historian sheds light on early Black families and the communities they built. Jennifer is also an active member of REACH (Remembering Each African Cemetery's History), a Black-led organization working to preserve and honour Black history in New Brunswick.

This is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the rich and often overlooked history of African-descended communities in our province. Whether you’re a history buff, a descendant, or simply interested in deepening your understanding of New Brunswick’s diverse past, you won’t want to miss this!
